Introducing our Partner: Delaware Center for Horticulture
Delaware Center for Horticulture transforms the lives of thousands through its outreach programs:
- Education: Workshops, lectures, and tours for gardeners of all levels/ages; job training for unemployed and/or previously incarcerated individuals; and youth enrichment programming providing field trips and education for preschool through high school.
- Public Landscapes: Expert landscape design and implementation to beautify public spaces.
- Urban Horticulture: Supporting community gardens and establishing Wilmington’s first urban farm.
- Community Forestry: Urban tree advocacy and education through plantings and care in conjunction with local, state, and federal partners.
DCH sees youth enrichment programming (YEP) as an important complement to classroom education and a means for introducing younger generations (and underserved populations in particular) to experiences with nature. When some second graders from a local elementary school visited the gardens at DCH on a field trip, our staff overheard many student comments: “I love nature!”, “This is better than the arcade!”, “This is the best place ever!”. It was these students’ first field trip experience, and the Vice Principal reported they talked about it the entire day.
"We believe that early experiences in nature shape a child’s worldview and foster a lifelong connection to the environment. Our youth enrichment program aims to cultivate these foundational experiences for children and teens, inspiring a deep appreciation for our planet. DCH is dedicated to serving underserved communities and providing opportunities for improved well-being and environmental stewardship. With the generous support of Sun East Foundation, DCH is expanding our YEP opportunities to serve more students in 2025.”
